RELATED STORY:
Can the US Win the War Against Ebola?

CDC: Nigeria Is Close & Will Soon Be Ebola Free...

ATLANTA – Ebola.  What an absolutely horrible and abysmal disease?  Well, horrible – Yes.  But Abysmal?  Maybe Not So Much...

Ever since I learned about Thomas Eric Duncan lying his way past international security measures all the way to Dallas, Texas - I've been a mess.  I thought to myself - "Well, this is it!  I called it a month ago!  I wrote about it - and here it is!  See, I predicted all of this almost a month ago in Facebook on September 20·

So, for several days after Duncan smuggled the virus into the US, I poured over every news story I could find and every medical resource I could access Online.  I honestly did so to try to determine how little time we all had left.  I was a wreck and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

You see, my background is not like that of most others.  I spent half my adolescent years in children’s hospitals - dealing with a very rare chronic illness.  And this is why I tend to overreact when it comes to health-related matters.

Then I read something about Ebola that I could not believe.  I spent a great deal of time confirming it and determined it to be completely true and accurate.  I can whole heartedly report the following: With regards to the Ebola crisis: We Americans are going to be fine.  Just fine.  And Possibly Much Cleaner!

The article I read that set me straight and gave me back my life was a story that came out of Nigeria of all places.  It turns out that Nigeria had been successful in keeping themselves Ebola free by constructively isolating themselves somewhat, performing vigorously thorough screenings at places of entry to their country and following other advice from our CDC.  And this was working quite well - until they had their own version of "Thomas Eric Duncan" show up in their airport back on July 20th and telling lie after lie to get himself into the country for medical treatment.

The individual's name is "Patrick Sawyer," and almost made it until he completely collapsed - right in front of everyone. He was then taken to a hospital to be further inspected for Ebola when those transporting him neglect to inform the ER they were on their way.

The transport team took zero protective measures and those in the hospital followed suit in complete trust.  It wasn't until Sawyers Ebola test came back with positive results that the Emergency Scenario burst into play.  But by then, it was far too late for dozens of innocent workers.

Mr. Sawyer had knowingly exposed dozens of hospital staff to the deadly virus in hopes of getting any sort of medical treatment for his Ebola.  For those in his country of origin, Liberia, were basically being left to die, for the most part.  Liberia and other countries in the region are at epidemic level.  All but Nigeria.

Many of the valiant Nigerian healthcare providers who had originally treated Sawyer in good faith with the very best of care have since perished from the deadly virus.  And many of them were doctors and nurses.  In fact, the help from those professionals who perished might have made the difference between a contained outbreak and an out-of-control catastrophe.  But we'll never know.

We'll never know - not because the virus has since become an epidemic in Nigeria, but because it hasn't.  That's right.  This third world country, which also happens to be Africa's most populous country, have had very few resources to fight the deadly contagion - but they've incredibly succeeded where all others around them have failed to prevent Ebola to turn epidemic.

About the ONLY thing Nigeria have had in their favor throughout this entire crisis was and continues to be a 100% willingness to listen to and follow the instructions of our CDC.  With a little bit of the CDC's guidance - the country acted extensively, rapidly and in a very focused & determined manner.

Nigeria is all but free of the deadly disease and there has not been a single new case detected in country since August 31.  According to our Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - this suggests that the outbreak could be coming to an end.  Imagine this much success from a country with so very little resources.  And all the while - Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea continue to be ravaged by an Ebola epidemic in their countries right next door.

When a country like Nigeria performs as well as they have when armed with little more than quality information, instruction and training - a country like ours should do quite a bit better.

The people of our country are comparatively wealthy in relation to those in third world countries.  We have an abundance of medical technology and a great deal of other resources available to us.  Americans get the job done when it counts the most. We always have and we always will.

So, when somebody poses the following question:

“Can the US Win the War Against Ebola?.."

You can honestly give them the following answer:...

“You Bet Your Ass We Can...
                                                                      ...And We Will."
