LAKE HARTWELL, GA. - Hartwell Lake is one of the southeast's largest and most popular public recreation lakes.

Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963 as part of a flood control, hydropower, and navigation project, authorized purposes now include recreation, water quality, water supply, and fish and wildlife management. Each year, millions of people utilize the many public parks, marinas, and campgrounds conveniently located around the lake to pursue a variety of outdoor recreational experiences -making Hartwell one of the most visited Corps lakes in the nation.

Hartwell Lake is a man-made lake bordering Georgia and South Carolina on the Savannah, Tugaloo, and Seneca Rivers. The lake is created by Hartwell Dam located on the Savannah River seven miles below the point at which the Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers join to form the Savannah. Extending 49 miles up the Tugaloo and 45 miles up the Seneca at normal pool elevation, Hartwell Lake comprises nearly 56,000 acres of water with a shoreline of 962 miles.

State parks designate 'fido-friendly' cottages
from staff reports

LAKE HARTWELL, GA. - After a successful year of testing its new dog-friendly policy, Georgia's State Park System is expanding the number of cottages that will accommodate man's best friend.

Beginning in May, all 30 state parks that have rental cottages will designate at least one of them as "fido friendly." Visitors with four-legged friends will be able to enjoy all the comforts of a fully equipped cottage without the inconvenience and cost of boarding. Previously, dogs had been allowed only in state park campgrounds.

"During our pilot test at just three state parks (including Tugalo on Lake Hartwell), we found that the dog-friendly cottages were often the first ones to be rented," said State Park Director Becky Kelley, "so we decided to expand this service to meet the growing trend of traveling with pets." According to a Travel Industry Association of America poll, more than 29 million Americans traveled with their pets during the last three years.

Visitors must request a fido-friendly cottage when making their reservation and are required to pay a $40 fee per dog, up to two, for the duration of their stay. All dogs should be house-trained, kept on a leash when not inside the cottage, and stay under owner supervision at all times while in the park. Guests are also responsible for any damage to the cottage, and all dogs must have current vaccinations and be free of fleas, ticks and mange.
