At least ten people have been wounded as two explosions rocked the largest mosque in New Delhi, India, just after Friday prayers.

Indian police commissioner KK Paul said the two explosions in the historic Jama Masjid mosque were small.

He said the second bomb exploded about seven minutes after the first.

Paul said: "It was a low-intensity improvised device and 10 people were injured."

The Indian NDTV television channel said police believed the explosives were placed in plastic bags, with no evidence of a timer.

Spokesperson for the mosque, Yahya Bukhari said: "As soon as the evening namaz (prayers) ended, the first blast went off. I would request all Muslims not to panic."

Police initially barricaded the area and searched for more explosives.

Worshippers were allowed back into the mosque for evening prayers less than an hour and a half after the blast.

Earlier on Friday, six explosions in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian state of Kashmir, killed five people and wounded 31.

The blasts rattled the city on the day devout Muslims offered special prayers at Kashmir's holiest shrine, Hazratbal, to mark the anniversary of Prophet Mohammad's birth.
