Ice is used on an acute or recent injury and should be used for at least 2-3 days. It is used for reducing pain, bleeding, inflammation, tissue damage and scarring. Cold, burning, aching and numbness are the four stages of experience when using ice. Ice is not recommended for those with HBP or compromised circulation.
Used for relaxation and therapy, massage can increase blood and lymph flow and decrease edema, scar tissue, spasms, lactic acid and nerve activity. Of the many types, trigger point therapy is the most effective treatment for pain relief. Trigger points are focal spots of muscle spasm developed by prolonged toxicity via: trauma, visceral disease or emotional stress.
This form of conduction energy is used for increasing blood flow, elasticity, enkephalin (analgesia) production and sweat (toxic waste). Heat is ideal for the reduction of muscle tension and spasm. It should be used after 72 hours of an injury or for chronic conditions. Heat is not recommended with bleeding disorders, cancer, high fever or infections.

It is a deep tissue therapy, which may be the only modality capable of effectively treating collagen tissue (ligaments, tendons and joint capsules).
