Krispy Kreme to offer doughnut holes in ’05

The Associated Press

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  — Krispy Kreme Doughnuts’ newest product to help turn around the company’s sagging fortunes may strike some as a bit stale — bite-sized doughnut holes, the kind competitors have been cooking up for decades.
The company is test-marketing the mini doughnuts near its Winston-Salem headquarters.
‘‘We believe that this product has the potential to create incremental sales for us both in retail and wholesale,’’ company chief executive Scott Livengood said recently.
He said Krispy Kreme plans to roll out the doughnut holes to stores and grocery chains in 2005.
Dunkin’ Donuts has offered doughnut holes, called Munchkins, since 1972. Tim Hortons, the largest doughnut chain in Canada, introduced its Timbits mini doughnuts in 1976.
Krispy Kreme spokeswoman Amy Hughes said the doughnut holes, which sell for 24 for $3.79, were introduced in response to customer demand and that sales have been strong. ‘‘They’re doing great,’’ she said.
The doughnut holes are available in several varieties, including original glazed, glazed cake, glazed blueberry cake and glazed chocolate cake.
Krispy Kreme, a Wall Street darling when it went public in 2000, recently reported its third straight quarterly earnings drop and shares are off 70 percent since the beginning of the year.
