Claims That New Cervical Cancer Vaccine Eliminates Need for Screening - "Dangerous and Irresponsible"

GDO Exclusive Report

ATLANTA - Cervarix, the new HPV vaccine designed to prevent sexually active females from contracting the Human Papilloma Virus which causes cervical cancer, was recently said to be so effective that it may eliminate the need for cervical cancer screening.   Articles recently published by hundreds of news media outlets around the world reported on this information which is now being hugely disputed.

These claims were based on studies published by researchers in Finland and the United States that also indicate that the new vaccine is only effective against only two strains of the disease.  It is currently unknown what the motivation was to circulate this misinformation, but it is said that corporate greed may be at the center of it.

Healthcare professionals we interviewed in the Atlanta medical community, specifically those in the field of research and treatment of HPV and cervical cancer, unanimously and overwhelmingly consider such claims to be "Dangerous and Irresponsible."

Every single healthcare professional we contacted vehemently expressed that screening or testing for the HPV virus and cervical cancer on a regular basis is extremely important for all females at risk and should never be discouraged by anyone.

Reasons the claims were considered dangerous and irresponsible by healthcare professionals were many.  For one, the new vaccine produced by GlaxoSmithKline is not proven to be effective in all strains of the virus, nor have long term effects of the vaccine been established.

Brand new screening technology for the Human Papilloma Virus as well as cervical cancer is just now becoming available that offers immediate, non-invasive and extremely accurate results.  This new technology named "LuViva", produced by Guided Therapeutics Inc. of Norcross, GA is certain to greatly reduce the inconvenience and cost of screening.  FDA approval for this new technology is expected by the end of this year.

Each year, over a million women world wide die from cervical cancer.  While the development of Cervarix is greatly celebrated throughout the medical community for its potential to prevent cervical disease, all proven methods of reducing that number should be utilized extensively.  This especially includes the regular use of new early detection technology.

Healthcare agencies world wide urge those media outlets that published this dangerous and irresponsible information to not only retract it, but also to encourage those at risk to test regularly for the HPV virus as well as cervical cancer - even if they did participate in the very limited vaccine program.
